Review: Kodiak Cakes Mix

October 5, 2018 by Rena

 Chocolate Chip Pancakes (kodiak mix)

Choco Chip PancakesI have been a fan of Kodiak’s Power Cakes for a while now. They are packed with protein, whole grain, and you only add water. What more can you ask for?

Oh yeah. And they are the easiest things to flip because they don’t fall apart when you’re trying to flip them! Round pancakes every time!!

So let’s look into the mix a little more.

Here’s the ingredient list:

Ingredients:

100% Whole Grain Wheat Flour, 100% Whole Grain Oat Flour, Power Cakes Protein Blend (Wheat Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate, Egg Whites), Non-Fat Sweet Cream Buttermilk Powder, Brown Sugar, Leavening (Monocalcium Phosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Sea Salt.

No crazy ingredients that I can’t understand! (They break down the leavening but the pancakes have to rise one way or another right?) And, the first ingredient is 100% whole grain wheat flour. That is so good to see. Makes me feel good about it already.

Now let’s look at the nutrition:

In 1/2 cup of the mix:

  • Calories: 190
  • Carbohydrates: 30g
  • Protein: 14g
  • Fat: 2g (0 trans fat!)
  • Fiber: 5g

Honestly, the nutrition and ingredient break-down have me sold as a kodiak pancake maker!! 14g of protein is a lot! To put it in perspective, there are about 6g of protein in one whole egg and around 20g (depending on the type you have) in 1 scoop of protein powder. So basically you get a lot of protein in your pancakes. Win-win.

You literally just add water. How simple is that? And it is much better nutrition-wise than Bisquik! Bisquik’s nutrition label reads 26g carbs, 3g protein, and 5g fat for 1/3 cup of the mix. The first ingredient is also “enriched flour bleached”. Whatever that means. I’d rather stick with 100% whole grain wheat flour from Kodiak.

And, we haven’t even touched on the taste yet. Tastes just like normal pancakes. Add chocolate chips like I did or blueberries or whatever else you normally add. Add maple syrup. Add your toppings, and you’re good to go!

Even my picky sister loved these pancakes! She chose to go the banana + nutella route with them- and let me tell you those were some grade A pancakes.

So go on and get yourself a box of Kodiak’s mix- I promise you won’t regret it!

Get it here at Target for only $4.99 for a 20 oz box! You can’t beat that price for sure! They also come in a bunch of different flavors including dark chocolate, so you can switch it up!
